HiDef's Fitness Program, TeamFit, is well underway. We, at HiDef, are especially aware of the importance of developing a routine of exercise in our lives, where operating in a virtual environment has become more prevalent in today's workplaces. We're excited to share our ideas, and hope we can encourage others who are also interested in staying fit. Again, feel free to weigh in on any creative ideas you may have to get your team "up and running".
Sometimes the hardest part of doing anything, is just getting started. This is especially true for beginning an exercise program. The hardest part is the first couple steps taken going out the door on a run, the first mile cycling, the first lap or two in a pool...or sometimes just putting on your tennis shoes. We all know how hard it can be; the body just doesn't want to do it. So, if you don't already have a regular exercise routine, I thought I'd mention a few ideas that might help get you started, and keep you on the right track toward getting in shape.
1. Enjoy Yourself
Try to find something that you either already enjoy or think you could learn to enjoy. This may be an opportunity to get involved in something you've always wanted to try, or something you've done in the past, but have gotten out of the habit of doing. It may even involve taking a class to get started on the basics.
2. One Step at a Time
Be patient and start slowly. Too many people get overly excited about beginning an exercise program and, consequently, take a "bigger bite than they can chew", only to become discouraged, injured, or so sore they can barely walk the next day. This is supposed to be fun. Keep in mind, it's taken most of us years to get out of shape, so we're not going to get back in shape in a week. Remember, the goal here is not to set a world record; it's to improve your level of fitness and have fun in doing so.
3. Be Creative
Be creative about how you might incorporate exercise into your daily lives. Here are some ideas you might like to try:
- The dog needs a walk so why not start a habit of going on a 20-30 minute walk in the evening to relax and burn a few calories. The dog will appreciate it, as well. If you don't have a dog, just go by yourself or with a neighbor. Walks can be very relaxing.
- Instead of going on the usual movie-and-dinner date, why not try taking your girlfriend out for a casual evening of playing tennis and a picnic.
- Do something new and different on vacation that you can't do at home, i.e. snorkeling, scuba diving or surfing.
- Find someone to participate with you. Exercising with a partner is usually easier and more fun.
Good luck and have fun!
