How many of us have ever talked about trying a new sport or activity...one of these days? I know I have. I keep threatening to take up tennis, in-line skating, rock climbing someday...when I can find the time. Unfortunately, as we get older that someday never seems to materialize. Having been a runner for years, I'm not so easily persuaded to opt out of my daily trot down the road, in favor of an alternative activity.
Nonetheless, when I have chosen that route, I've reaped the benefits. In the past 5 years, I've discovered a love of cycling and swimming, primarily because the numerous running injuries I've endured have forced me either onto the bike or into the pool. In an effort to get a good cardio workout without any further assault to my legs, they have proven viable alternatives. Not only have I discovered my enjoyment of these exercises, but have also experienced the added benefits of cross-training and the pleasure of meeting a new group of active, healthy people.
Another reason to try something new - keeping up with your kids who will, no doubt, soon surpass you. Still, kids seem to broaden your horizons by presenting some new challenge in the activity in which they're currently involved which, by the way, you will never be able to do as well as they - they'll be the first to remind you of that. However, because of my kids, I recently tried rock climbing at a local climbing gym, and had a great time - something I will definitely do again, thanks to them.
Still, another reason to try something new is to discover some activity you may really enjoy. This is especially applicable to those of us who would like to get in shape but who have never found an activity they like. Why not make it your goal this year to try 3 or 4 new things - you might be surprised. Enlist the support of friends by joining them in some form of activity in which they participate or sign up for a group fitness class with a friend. The bottom line - no one will ever develop a regular routine of exercise until they find something they truly enjoy. So, get out there and try something new. Who knows...you're very likely to find something you like and you can continue doing for years to come.
